Message Board This is a place where you can discuss stuff with the B.C. foosball community. The link is at the top of this and most other pages. Please keep it clean. Use your best
"netiquette". Assume that last post about your weak game wasn't actually a
personal attack on your character. (A lot of good-natured ribbing goes
on). If you have nothing good to say about the poster's mother, don't say
anything at all. This list is intended to make it easy to discuss foosball
players' concerns and interests. Buying a Table? We play our local tournaments on Tornados and recommend them as solid home tables. If you are likely to want to play in tournaments, we recommend Tornado. If you choose not to play in tournaments, Tornado, Shelti, and Bonzini all offer excellent home value. If available, ensure the table you buy has counter-balanced players, which are important in Singles and Goalie Wars! For tournament play, the closer to the tournament tables the better. Tornado With Tornado, a good bet is a used coin-op or T2000 (same as the coin-op, but without the coin mechanism), but used Tornado tables are rare, as they last well, and people rarely stop playing once they start! They retain value very well, especially in a home-use environment, and can be readily resold. Legend Johnny Lott, legendary fooser from the 70's is introducing a new table this year. Shelti Shelti tables are newer, and are similar to Tornado, but provide a greater variety of playing styles. However, as noted previously, Shelti tables are not used in tournament play. If you end up playing in Tornado tournaments, the skills you learn will transfer, perhaps just not as well. We've had some local players buy Shelti, but then later purchase (at some expense!) Tornado men to improve their tournament game. Shelti tables are well-made, and are expected to be reliable in the long run. Bonzini Bonzinis too are well-respected tables, and offer yet more variety in play than the German-style Tornados and Sheltis. They have telescoping rods (which don't protrude from the far side of the table), and are therefore safer when young children are around. However, consider Bonzinis only if you and your household have absolutely no interest in ever playing tournament foosball. Unless you plan on moving to Quebec City, the U.S. southeast, or France. Italian-Style These tables have little presence in B.C. other than in a few pubs, and also in coffee shops on Commercial Drive. They are of lighter construction and, like Bonzini, have telescoping rods, which are safer for young children. Although not often seen in most of B.C., they are extremely popular in parts of Toronto and Quebec, and in certain regions overseas, such as Great Britain, and, of course, Italy. Quite honestly, we don't recommend them, unless you're already used to playing on them and have no interest in local tournament play. Where to Buy Here are some sources for tables. This information is provided as a favour to potential buyers in the community. It is not an endorsement and Vancouver Foosball is not reimbursed for providing this information.
Budget Tables Finally, we cannot recommend the budget tables you might find at department and discount stores. These tables typically cost $500 or less brand new, and have various quality problems that may result in the table gathering dust in your basement. The play surface usually settles into a subtle bowl shape quite quickly, the balls can't roll straight, the men become loose, bolts strip easily, tiny vinyl balls drop out of the ball bearings, etc. etc. If your boss thinks she's doing you a favour buying one of these for your break room, disabuse her of that notion. It can be expected to have low resale value once you decide to reclaim the unused space it occupies. Other than that, we hold no strong opinions on these tables. |
